Whorouly murder accused faces court: police tell of fatal beating

A WHOROULY man and his co-accused, charged with the murder of another man in Wodonga on Sunday, are set to plead self-defence.

Solicitors for Ronald Dale Croxford, 36, of Whorouly, and Ricky Doubleday, 27, of Wodonga, indicated the pleas as both defendants appeared in Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Monday.

Neither applied for bail and both were remanded in custody for a commital mention in Wodonga in November.

Homicide detective Senior Constable Maurice Ryan briefly told the court of the police case against the pair.

He said Croxford, Doubleday, and 49-year-old husband and father, Billy Winter of Wodonga, were standing with two women outside the Birallee Tavern at about 1am.

Mr Winter produced a knife for an unknown reason, although police said he had not threatened anyone.

Croxford allegedly became aggressive and he and Doubleday punched Mr Winter in the face.

Mr Winter attempted to leave but the defendants each grabbed a wooden garden stake and beat him.

Mr Winter died at the scene and the defendants were arrested a short time later.

Speaking outside the court, Croxford’s defence solicitor, Mario Vaccaro, said his client feels for the family, and is very distressed over the whole tragedy, noting that Croxford’s family was also suffering.

Wangaratta solicitor, Kerry Clancy, representing Doubleday, said his client’s family was "heartened by the fact there is a defence, a potential self-defence".

This pathetic article is a pure example of the media being nieve and brutal. I can truly say that Mr Winters had more to do with his death than ppl think. Obviously there would have been witnesses and there were!!! but are obvioulsy to occupied in their little beds to have called the police when they heard the words "I'll kill you" mind you these wrods came from Billy Winters/111 go figure, I don't even want to imagine what pathetic views the public of Wodonga have been exposed to.I personally know Mr Doubleday & it is NOT in this boys nature to hurt any one with intention!!!! he is a loyal friend and would have done what any one of you would do if your friends life was in jepordy. Lets wake up ppl, open your eyes and read between the bloody lines.
It is only now that I beleive that innocent ppl really can be held from their right. Get Mr Doubleday out of their I say, it is no place for him.

Pissed of.....

I wish the papers would print what BILLY WINTERS was really like. Lets get his wife on stand so she can tell the public what a monster he really was..... I also want to know what DRUGS were in his system along with the size of the knife and knuckle dusters found gripped in his hands.

Time will tell people.. The truth always comes out & it will. Many people are effected by the bitter stories & untruths that are told by the media, not to mention the families that are suffering & pining for thier loved one's. This is not in Ricky's nature at all & anyone who know's Ricky & his kind heart is aware that he was only protecting himself & his mate.. As a family member of both of these men I am truley saddened by the rubbish that has been said about them, both will be grieving & missing those dear to them so dont be led astray by what people say, stay strong and wait for the truth to rise..

I always thought the imbicile known as Billy Winter would at a minimum get kneecapped, and I'm not surprised that he's dead. How many people around Sale have been threatened with death by this dickhead - plenty.

I only hope the two blokes get off - anyone who came across this tool after a night on the juice & powder would fear for their life. How would they know that he was just a piece of loudmouth vermin..........

i have known crowie since i was 13 years old, i'm 35 now. he is a great guy, loyal to his friends and adores his family. i hope the public get to see the side of him that his family and friends do instead of the monster he is made out to be by the media and by people who don't even know him. mr winters was described as a loving family man.... who just happened to bash his wife and who knows what else. all the best to crowie and his family. i hope he is home with you soon.
