Nationals spearhead inquiry into Regional Centres

Source: Bill Sykes Media Release - 6 Jan 09
In 2008 The Nationals successfully applied pressure on the Victorian Government to initiate an Inquiry into Regional Centres of the Future. The inquiry will continue throughout 2009 to consider initiatives to assist regional Victoria’s strong growth in line with urban centres.

“The Nationals are committed to looking after the interests of country Victoria. This inquiry is yet another way to ensure rural areas receive the same amount of economic and social development as major cities like Melbourne. For that reason we welcome the undertaking of this inquiry,” Nationals Member for Benalla Bill Sykes said.

The Inquiry aims to develop strategies to build on current investment in regional Victoria and to make certain rural centres are placed to meet the challenge of predicted future population growth. Included in the terms of reference are consideration of measures to encourage new and existing businesses, industries and government authorities to operate in rural centre.

“The Nationals have applied pressure on the Rural and Regional Committee to establish this inquiry and we are confident of positive outcomes which will enhance and strengthen Victoria’s rural centres,” Bill Sykes said.

Key local issues in the Benalla Electorate include lack of public transport, increasing electricity costs and the failure of the Victorian Government to deliver on its promise of natural gas.

“It is hoped the inquiry will address other issues such as planning zone problems which at the moment make it difficult for rural areas to meet future development needs,” Bill Sykes said.

With continued population growth in rural Victoria it is essential measures are put in place to promote strong social capital and high quality of life outcomes. The inquiry will look at examples where population growth in regional centres has successfully occurred.

“I am committed to ongoing participation in this inquiry and invite members of the public input into the inquiry process,” Bill Sykes said.

A Regional Public Hearing for the Northeast is scheduled for 23 April 2009 in Wangaratta. For updates and further information refer to www.parliament.vic.gov.au/rrc or contact the Rural & Regional Committee on 03 8682 2884.
