Rail upgrade stops traffic in its tracks

WORK on the $501m North East Rail Revitalisation Project saw road traffic interrupted in Rowan Street on Wednesday.

Workers removed wooden sleepers from the old broad gauge line on the Rowan Street overpass, replacing them with concrete sleepers suitable for the new standard gauge line.

But while the gauge of the track is changing, the steel line will stay.

A spokesperson for The Australian Rail track Corporation, which is undertaking the work, said the dimensions of the line itself did not need to change.

"It’s not a standard rail replacement," he said.

"Depending on the quality of the rail, it will stay.

"But, if it is not up to standard, it will be replaced."

Work will continue on the line in Wangaratta but the spokesperson said he was unsure if there would be more traffic interruptions.

The upgrade is expected to be completed in 2010.
