Unacceptable way to become grandparents

  • The parents of a 23-year-old killed by cancer are not entitled to use their dead son's preserved sperm so they can have a grandchild, an appeals court ruled on Tuesday.
  • Following their son's death in January 1998, Mary and Antonio Speranza of Edison, New Jersey, told Repro's operator that they wanted a grandchild and wanted to save the sperm so a surrogate mother could be artificially inseminated.

      • How impossible this would be! The grandparents intended to have a surrogate mother impregnated with their son's sperm. The surrogate mother, doing it for the money, would have a child by IVF. So, who has the primary responsibility for the care of that child and what, if any, influence could the grandparents have over that child's life. It appears to me to be a selfish, poorl;y thought out concept made in a bid to lesson the blow of the death of their son.  A wise decision by the court! - post by gnaylor

I think that the couple simply want something to remind them of their son - i can only imagine the pain, and of course one would do anything to have something that resembled a love back again - their desire doesnt necessarily show selfishness, but a great love for their son.
oh - and just a question - why are they holding his sperm? if they can't use it - who will? and if someone does, will they be notified, becuase thats obviouly what they want - someone to have their grandchild.

He requested that should he die, his sperm be destroyed. His parents are actually going againstt their son's wished

Whilst I can appreciate that they simply want something to remind them of their son, it is not their place to control the lives of other people.

perhaps not - i was under the immpression that he may have had wishes for the preservation of his sperm - which is not the case. Why hasn't it been destroyed then?

Now that the court case over access to his sperm has been concluded, I guess it will be.
