Why are Australian soldiers in Afghanistan?

  • Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon says he welcomes the admission by US President Barack Obama that the western forces are losing the war in Afghanistan.

  • Mr Fitzgibbon says admitting that the war effort in Afghanistan has flaws is an important step.

    "I've said for some time now, indeed the Australian Government has said we need to do better, we need properly resourced and coordinated military, and civil, and political plans," he said.

    "That's what I'm confident we will get out of the United States and NATO, once the current planning process is completed."
