LIFE'S A STITCH - WORK BY THE NORTH EAST EMBROIDERER'S GUILD

EDDIE KNEEBONE (1947 - 2005): BONES OF CONTENTION
Wodonga Art Space, Lawrence Street Wodonga. 8 June - 8 July 2006.
This exhibition features paintings from the last body of work completed in December 2005, by the late Eddie Kneebone as an Artist in Residence at Wodonga Institute of TAFE. Eddie, a passionate and important Indigenous role model, elder artist and storyteller believed "that painting the past 100 years of early contact, conflict and settlement within the North East region, rather than writing it in several volumes would provide greater impact on the observer of all ages". JAZZ ALBURY WODONGA - BEN WINKELMAN TRIO

Diverse, dynamic, hard-hitting, free-thinking... the Ben Winkelman Trio is a contemporary jazz piano trio that draws on diverse influences, which range from Herbie Hancock to Jelly Roll Morton, Brazilian music, Afro-Cuban music, gospel and Bartok. The word on the street is that young people aged between 12 and 25 should get their art together and submit an entry for the ...word on the street Youth Art Exhibition. Part of the 2006 Cathedral Music Program The Choir of Trinity College is conducted by Michael Leighton Jones and has gained great regard both in Australia and overseas through both performance and recordings. Yes its that time of year again - The 2006 Stitched Up Textile Festival is back with a fantastic program for lovers of all things textile. Highlights of this year's program include the fantastic displays at the Wangaratta Airport Pavilion, which is the main festival venue, "The Great Apron Quest" heritage exhibition at the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre the usual amazing display of children's artwork in the Post Office Arcade. There is lots to see and do with workshops and displays all over the region including patchwork and embroidery workshops at Pangerang Community House and Felting and Millinery workshops at Shades of Art. HOME - AN EXHIBITION BY BRIDGET NICHOLSON

To celebrate Wangaratta’s annual ‘Stitched Up’ Textiles Festival, The Muse Gallery and the Milawa Cheese Factory, are presenting ‘Home’ – an exhibition of contemporary textiles by artist Bridget Nicholson. Bridget will be exhibiting sculptural works made of felt, produced over
the last 18 months. These extraordinary works comprise a series of felt ‘cocoons’ which hang from the ceiling and are of varying sizes: some are large enough for animals and children to climb into, while others are big enough for an adult to occupy. Having completed her Masters
studies, Bridget has a forthcoming artist-in-residence at Gunnedah. She has recently exhibited at the SheppARTon Festival, and Moreland Sculpture Show in Melbourne. Her work is held in the Bundanon Trust Collection at the residence of the late Australian artist, Arthur Boyd.

ROBERT JACKS DRAWING PRIZE INCORPORATING THE PAUL GUEST ACQUISITIVE PRIZE

Robert Jacks is recognised as one of Australia's most significant and accomplished abstract artists. Born in Melbourne in 1943, Jacks trained in sculpture at Prahran TAFE and painting at RMIT. He has held more than 50 solo exhibitions throughout his career with the 1968 exhibition
The Field chosen to launch the new National Gallery of Victoria. He lives and works in Central Victoria. 2006 marks the fifth year of the Robert Jacks Drawing Prize. To celebrate this occasion Justice Paul Guest has offered an additional $5000 to the prize as an acquisitive award. GOURMET CHOCOLATE TOUR

This Gourmet Chocolate Trip is designed for true lovers of chocolate and fine dining. On arrival in Melbourne the two hour chocolate tour begins with morning tea at one of Melbourne's finest cake shops, followed with lunch at one of Melbourne's award winning restaurants - Alto Room a the Langham Hotel. Lunch includes two course set menu and buffet deserts tray and meeting with the Hotels renowned pastry chef. ARTISTS IN SCHOOLS - ARTS VICTORIA INFORMATION SESSION

The Artists In School Program creates the opportunity for practising professional artists to work with young people in Victorian primary and secondary schools. It involves schools and communities in creative partnership projects while providing students, teachers and artists with
diverse and challenging learning experiences. The program generates innovative ways to engage students across all strands of the curriculum, Prep - Year 10. Artists and designers may work in any artform. Schools can receive up to $5000 for an artist(s) to work in the school for up to 21 days. The information session, presented by Arts Victoria and the Rural City of Wangaratta provide information regarding previous project outcomes and issues associated with funding applications and sourcing artists. OUR SOPHIE: Mrs Mirabella Is Born

Future Lodge occupants Mr and Mrs Sophie Mirabella (nee Panopoulos) were wed in a lavish nuptial spectacular yesterday that mesmerised the entire population of north-eastern Victoria.

Humble townsfolk from the place we call "Wang" lined the route to the Cathedral and threw rose petals and shed tears as the area's Princess finally took husband. The feistiest party girl of the north-east will leave a massive hole in the social affairs of the community as she transforms from Princess to the full rank of local Queen.

Political insiders were shocked that Ms Panopoulos had taken the traditional family values step of becoming a Mrs Mirabella although proud locals were chuffed that she was honouring her man in every way.

  It seems that Sophie has seen the light ... Mirabella that is!

SEVERAL government dignitaries stood alongside members of the public to greet Mr and Mrs Mirabella with warm applause as the newlyweds emerged from Wangaratta’s Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral on Saturday.

Health Minister Tony Abbott, federal MP Bronwyn Bishop and liberal heavyweight Michael Kroger were among the 250 guests who witnessed member for Indi Sophie Panopoulos become Mrs Mirabella.

Weary Dunlop award winners go to the footy

Eight winners of the ‘Weary’ Dunlop Award and their families had a great night out watching Collingwood beat Brisbane at the MCG on Saturday night. (Click photo for enlargement)

The eight young people and their families were guests of ex Fitzroy player Bill Sykes and Nationals Member for Benalla who initiated and sponsors the ‘Weary’ Dunlop Award.

The Award winners also visited the Lions’ rooms prior to the game and saw all the team warming up. Jason Akermanis and Mal Michaels were the children’s favourites.

“The ‘Weary’ Dunlop, You’ve Got What It Takes Award recognises students who have shown persistence and resilience to overcome challenges and to achieve their goals.

Brisbane Lions co-sponsor the award and this year Collingwood Football Club generously donated 15 tickets.

Bill said, “Everyone had a great night, even those of us who were barracking for the Lions in the midst of the Magpie army."

“I am very grateful to Brisbane for the tickets and for the special opportunity to visit the rooms pre-game. And Collingwood’s support, as a result of one phone call, is tremendous.”

He concluded, “The smiles of delight on the faces of the award winners has convinced me to continue with this award to encourage young people to overcome challenges in their lives to achieve their goals and to become responsible citizens and leaders in our community”.

Snowy saved - people power works in Australia

The campaign against the sale of the Snowy by environmentalists, irrigators, Greens, Nationals, locals MPs, high profile Australians and members of the general public has proved that people power works.

Here is the timeline on what happened:

Snowy Timeline

16 December 2005 - NSW government announces it will sell its 58% share in Snowy Hydro.

8 February, 2006 - Finance Minister Nick Minchin announces the federal government is selling its 13% share, following NSW's decision.

13 February 2006 - VIC government joins the sale, with its 29% shareholdings

8 March 2006 - Joint lead managers are announced to handle the sale - Goldman Sachs JBWere, Macquarie Bank, and UBS

29 March 2006 -With only 24 hours notice, the Senate passes a motion "to approve the transfer or disposal of the Commonwealth shares in the Snowy Hydro Company..." In the Senate, those against: the Greens' Bob Brown, Kerry Nettle (NSW), Christine Milne (Tas) and Rachel Siewert (WA); and the Democrats' Lyn Allison (Vic), Andrew Bartlett (Qld) and Natasha Stott Despoja (SA). Bill Heffernan (Liberal, NSW) Andrew Murray ( Democrats, WA) abstained.

30 March 2006 - House of Representatives passes the motion to approve the sale. Independent MPs Peter Andren and Tony Windsor are the only two to record their dissent.

22 May 2006 - Pre-registration for Snowy float opens

May 24 2006 - Greens release legal advice from Brian Walters SC, that the sale of the government's shares is illegal until it passes actual legislation through the Parliament, not just motions. The government rejects the advice but later moves to introduce legislation, setting up a new vote on the sale, and this time, a loss in the Senate.

May 24 2006 - Senator Brown sends a letter to the Australian Stock Exchange outlining the legal problems with the sale of the Commonwealth's shares and advises they get independent legal advice.

May 25 2006 - The Prime Minister, on returning to Australia, tells the Parliament that," this is probably an issue where, on the surface, a majority of public opinion would oppose what is being done by the three governments ... But for the reasons I have outlined, I think the government has taken the right decision." He says the government's legal advice is "pretty sound"

May 30 2006 - A motion from Peter Andren MP, seconded by Tony Windsor MP opposes the sale pending a public inquiry in the House of Representatives. Liberals adjourn debate.

May 30 2006 - Senator Bob Brown sends ultimatum to Howard to legislate or the Greens will institute a High Court challenge. Government announces legislation to put a cap on foreign ownership. Senator Minchin says the legislation will "have the effect of reaffirming the authority of the Commonwealth to participate in the sale."

May 31 2006 - Greens announce their move for a senate inquiry into the sale.

June 1 2006 - A letter signed by 56 prominent Australians opposed to the sale is presented to the VIC, NSW and federal Parliaments.

June 2 2006 - Prime Minister announces the federal government will be withdrawing its 13% share from the Snowy sale. NSW and VIC governments follow shortly after.

"The big parties have been routed by Australian public opinion," Greens Leader Bob Brown said today. Messrs Howard, Vaile and Beazley misread the Australian public. The Greens did not. This is a Greens political victory but, above all, a victory for democracy."

SYKES TABLES TATONG ROAD PETITION IN PARLIAMENT

A petition calling on the Bracks Government to increase the safety of the Benalla-Tatong Road was tabled in Parliament this week by Bill Sykes, Nationals Member for Benalla.

The petition bearing 371 signatures highlighted the dangers to cyclists and drivers due to the inadequate width of the road and the poor condition of the bitumen shoulders, particularly on corners. The petition called for sealing of the bitumen shoulders as a start.

Dr Sykes has met with concerned local residents and encouraged them to work with local VicRoads staff, in particular drawing to the attention of VicRoads the dozen or more accidents or near misses in the past 12 months.

Mr Brian Vial has presented this information to VicRoads who are going to place a traffic meter on the road to gain updated information upon which to seek funding for 2007/08.

Dr Sykes said, “It appears that repairs to Tatong Road and many other roads in country Victoria are low on the Bracks Government’s priority list.

“This week’s budget offers little, if any, addition State money for country roads.”

Dr Sykes concluded, “I and my Nationals Parliamentary colleagues will continue to press the Bracks Government to adopt our policy of 1% of Victoria’s GST (ie. $80m pa) being directed to local councils for road and bridge repairs with the ‘lion’s share’ going to disadvantaged councils such as Benalla, Mansfield, Strathbogie, Murrindindi and Alpine.

FOX BOUNTY PAY OUT

Bill Sykes initiated his own bounty in order to highlight to the Bracks Government the importance of the bounty as part of a coordinated assault on foxes.

Dr Sykes said, “Noel O’Connor gave me the statistics which confirmed the positive impact of the fox bounty on reducing the numbers of foxes.

“Mr O’Connor said that at the time of the bounty in 2002, his group of shooters shot 170-180 foxes on district farms. Numbers shot on the same farms then decreased to 60-70 per year for a couple of years before building up again to 170 – 180 per year.”

Dr Sykes continued, “This evidence strongly suggests that the fox bounty contributed significantly to reducing fox numbers and there are similar experiences elsewhere in the State”.

Dr Sykes concluded, “It is about time the Bracks Government listened to country people and made some commonsense decisions like reinstating the fox bounty. I and my Nationals colleagues will continue to hound the Bracks Government to live up to its promise to govern for all Victorians”.

SYKES SPEAKS UP FOR SPORTS CLUBS ON WATER

A call for the Bracks Government to reduce the cost of water for local recreation reserves was made in Parliament this week by Bill Sykes, Nationals Member for Benalla.

Dr Sykes used the experiences of Devenish Football/Netball Club and Tatong Football/Netball Club to highlight the additional burden that increased water costs and delays in water projects have on clubs already struggling to get teams on the fields and courts each week.

Dr Sykes’ statement follows:
"I wish to draw the attention of the house to the plight of many small country football and netball clubs as they battle for survival. In the Benalla and District Football and Netball League several matches have had to be forfeited this year due to a lack of players.

The Devenish Football and Netball Club has been particularly hard hit. To compound its problems, it is facing significant increases in the cost of water for its ground. This is because Goulburn Murray Water is applying tough, user-pay principles to the water used for community recreation facilities. Similarly, the attention of the Tatong community is being diverted from recruiting footballers and netballers because of the protracted negotiations with Goulburn Murray Water and other organisations over putting in a dam to provide emergency water supplies in the event of a drought or fire.

The Bracks government could make life a lot easier for small country football and netball clubs by showing some commonsense and compassion in the application of water management policies. In particular, I ask the Bracks government to review its policy of requiring community recreation reserves to purchase water -- or alternatively, to provide grants for the purchase of water and the costs of metering et cetera. I also request the Bracks government to direct organisations such as Goulburn Murray Water to adopt a can-do approach and implement projects such as the Tatong community emergency water supply promptly and efficiently. It is time the Bracks government lived up to its claim to govern for all Victorians."

BUDGET OF MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

The Bracks Government’s city-centric 2006 Budget has resulted in missed opportunities to improve infrastructure and services to country Victoria according to Bill Sykes, Nationals Member for Benalla.

Dr Sykes was also very critical of the Government’s borrowings – he said, “In spite of receiving double the income of a few years ago, the Labor Government is now doubling its debt to fund recurrent expenditure and costly, mismanaged major projects.

Dr Sykes continued, “Support for country taxis was good news as was funding for Neighbourhood Centres. These are both issues which I and my Nationals colleagues have battled long and hard alongside taxi owners and community groups.

“That said the Government’s commitment to Neighbourhood Centres (around $27m) was well short of the $84m requested to ensure adequate funding for all Neighbourhood Centres.

“At this stage, the Government still won’t fund 30 Neighbourhood Centres (including Bonnie Doon Community Centre) because it hasn’t worked out the process yet – that is taking management incompetence to another level!”

Funding for Mt Beauty Neighbourhood Centre is still well short of what is needed because the Government continues to use statistics which even they acknowledge are grossly incorrect.

Dr Sykes said, “Missed opportunities included failure to fund the co-location of emergency services (CFA, SES, Police & Ambulance) in centres such as Benalla, Euroa and Nagambie.

“Roads missed out – so users of the Whitfield-Wangaratta Road and many other country roads will continue to have their lives put at risk due to dangerous road conditions.

“Adoption of the Nationals policy of 1% of GST going direct to local Shires for roads and bridges would have solved many problems.”

Dr Sykes continued, “$50m for school maintenance works is a start but given that there has been little funding for school maintenance for several years, I suggest that only the most urgent repairs will be done.

“And of course energy costs in Country Victoria continue to soar but there was nothing in the Budget for more natural gas connections to honour previous promises of Mr Bracks & Co to connect Alexandra, Bonnie Doon, Mansfield, Myrtleford and Bright to natural gas.

“I am also very disappointed with the lack of funding for railway level crossing safety.”

Dr Sykes concluded, “Country Victoria has been forgotten by the Bracks Government – but country people will not forget what Mr Bracks has done come the election of 25 November 2006.
